Sommige originele Game Boy en Game Boy Color games hebben een ingebouwde save batterij in de cartridge. Die batterij wordt gebruikt om save-data, voortgang of in sommige gevallen high scores te bewaren.
Dat is vooral handig om te weten als je tweedehands cartridges koopt. Een game kan er aan de buitenkant prima uitzien, maar alsnog niet meer goed opslaan als de batterij leeg is. Niet iedere cartridge heeft zo’n batterij, maar bij een flink aantal titels is dat wel het geval.

Wat betekent dit voor een gebruikte cartridge?
Bij een game met save batterij is het goed om te weten dat de batterij na al die jaren leeg kan raken. In dat geval kan een cartridge bijvoorbeeld geen savegame, voortgang of high score meer vasthouden. De game kan dan nog gewoon opstarten en speelbaar zijn, maar de opslagfunctie werkt niet meer zoals het hoort.
